As the name implies, it a type of intra-uterine device (IUD) that contains copper which works by irritating the lining of the uterus, preventing implantation of a fertilised egg. One brand of Copper IUD is Mona Lisa. It is a small, soft plastic, T-shaped device with a copper coil around the body. It sits in the space inside your uterus. It has strings which, while cut short, protrude from the cervix to allow easy removal at any time. Unlike a Mirena or a Kyleena, a Copper IUD contains no hormones.
